Not too long ago, a close friend of the author asked for some help. He had a bit of stuff at his mum’s house, which she was selling (the house, not Rob’s equipment). She’d asked if he was able clear the boxes out of the house before the handover took place, which was just over a week later. The big difficulty for my mate was that his mother lives in Beverley, North Yorkshire whilst He resides in Manchester. He does not drive however the quantity of gear he wished to transport would be far too modest to warrant hiring a van yet very much too large to make trains and buses an option.

It so happened that I had managed to take a handful of days off from my job where I didn’t actually have to do much of anything, naturally therefore I suggessted to meet up with him in Lancaster one Tuesday afternoon, go over to my residence that night to sleep, and then travel across Yorkshire in that mightiest of motor vehicles; a Land Rover. And so, weary and quite possibly a bit delicate because of the wonderful, home-made steak & ale pie presented with ale, followed by some more strong ales the previous evening, we set on our way. Our undertaking of achieving Beverley at this point paled into insignificance compared to our overwhelming desire for the English travellers’ breakfast of choice; a bacon & egg bun.

We stopped at glorious greasy spoon burger van in a car park just near to Skipton. In the vehicle a little earlier both of us had been once more struck by the fundamental beauty of the rolling hills and wide farm lands surrounding us. Nonetheless, standing outside at the café on a rather bleak, cold & breezy day, we both just wished to appreciate it from within the 4 x 4 once again. Thus breakfasted and now having a pair of mugs of powerful tea, we began again on the journey. In accordance with the established subject of “A Thoroughly British Road Trip”, we had made a decision earlier not to employ GPS at any point during the trip. We would instead depend on a large street atlas and My mate’s map-reading competencies.

Forewarned is forearmed, as an ancient adage tells us. Not relying on satellite navigation from a mechanical voice enabled us to prepare a route in preparation on the map, meant that we through choice cut out all larger villages in order to miss any and all other vehicles. I have learned from bitter experience just how little fun travelling through Bradford and York might be. I appreciate that Sat nav may be pre-programmed for such factors, but there genuinely seems no point when I employ a book with the same knowledge in it. The book on top of that will not need to have batteries and has an on-screen set up time of 0.0 seconds.

Our simple-but-cunning adventure worked really well and we arrived at our destination approximately four hrs after we had started out. And needless to say, the simple pleasure of travelling across Englands’ biggest county in a fantastic machine designed to handle the wayward paths and rough by-ways we occasionally met there. It was one of those rare driving encounters that consistent with the point of yet another vintage expression about travel, which claims that it's not the end, but in what way one makes the journey that is the more worthy part. And if you are accompanied by an old mate, a road map, a breakfast sandwich and of course, a Land Rover, I would most definately concur.
