Majority of the parents depend on the ‘time out’ way of imbibing discipline in the child, but the main question is whether it works. Actually this depends on the child, the parent, and the type of ‘crime’. Some parents believe it whereas others see it like just another method of punishing the child. Before knowing if this works for you and your family, and before you start using it, you should be aware of a few things.

If you use the ‘time out’ method, you must start applying it initially at an early stage of the child’s life, or when you know the child understands the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. This will definitely not work in case the child is clueless about what is happening. When the child is about two years, it’s a good time to start using this method. Upon reaching this age the child has an idea about what is unacceptable and what they are permitted to do.

Most of the parents are weighed down easily and then they rely on the time out method as a means of punishing the child. They force the kid to sit in a certain area for a particular time interval. The advantage you gain from this is that while the child calms down in due course, you also get some peaceful moments to relax. However, the disadvantage is that the kid becomes aggressive and irritated as he is forced to be seated for a certain time frame. This might make you more frustrated as you wonder why this is not working. So you see in these circumstances you and the child only stand to lose.

When your child reaches an age where he can understand the difference between right and wrong, you must sit with him and converse in a language he can best understand the reasons his behavior is annoying you. Communicating with the child in a way where the child is in a position to understand what you are trying to tell him is really effective. Here, time out could be utilized as a tool as it gives time to the child to reflect on what you spoke to him about and where his actions were wrong.

Due to a few reasons some children do not get it. The situation is worse if you are always threatening them with a time out but don’t enforce it. This way the problem will only continue as the child realizes his misbehavior will have none of your reaction. If you yell, scream or drag him towards the time out area, the child will only become afraid, aggressive and confused and this is definitely not what you want.

The working of the time out method completely depends on how it is handled. Children are responsive to a polite and reasonable tone but even if you follow this, they mostly deny listening to you. So you see, every instance is different and you will have to adopt the methods that are suitable for your family.
