Drug addiction is far from an issue of willpower, but addicts’ choices can still make or break their chances to stay sober. As they complete rehab programs and begin sober lives, addicts must make tough decisions regarding their social lives, careers, families, and homes. Just as drug addiction affects all aspects of sufferers’ lives, recovery must be an all-encompassing effort.

The following are some of the tough life choices addicts must make during rehab. These decisions are often painful, but the reward of long-lasting sobriety is well worth the hardship.

Confronting Pain

Most addicts who seek treatment at rehab facilities suffer a great deal of personal anguish. They often destroy their careers, friendships, and family lives with their addictive behaviors, and their lives are left in shambles. However, talking about their hardships is crucial for recovery.

Firstly, addicts must address their deepest personal issues during individual counseling sessions with rehab specialists. Counselors can help their patients uncover the root causes of their addictions, but addicts must be ready and willing to talk about the problems which led them to use drugs.

Also, rehab patients must open up and discuss their struggles with other addicts during group therapy. Participation in peer group discussions isn’t always required, but patients can only get the most out of their treatments if they courageously share their experiences. Active participation in group therapy often helps people learn invaluable coping strategies for dealing with future cravings.

Saying Goodbye

One of the most difficult parts of rehab is cutting ties with old friends. Most addicts have friends and acquaintances that still use drugs, but continued association with these people will inevitably lead to relapse. Addicts must be willing to remove these people from their lives. Only then can they focus on repairing old relationships and making new, drug-free friends.

Prioritizing Sobriety

Physical, mental, and emotional stressors often contribute to drug problems and heighten the risk of relapse for recovering addicts. In order to avoid excessive stress and manage their cravings, many addicts must make sweeping changes to their lives.

For instance, driven rehab patients with high-powered careers must often take on new jobs with reduced responsibilities. Even if they spent years progressing within their companies, maintaining high-stress positions can make continued sobriety all but impossible.

Many addicts must even make new living arrangements. Some neighborhoods and cities are rampant with drug abuse, and easy availability of drugs can make avoiding relapse extremely difficult. Moving may be inconvenient and costly, but it is well worth the reward of long-term sobriety.

Seeking Help

The first step in addiction treatment is often the hardest. Rehab clinics can provide the resources necessary for recovery, but addicts must make the choice to confront their problems and change their lives. No matter how badly you’re suffering, an effective rehab program can help you get back on your feet and get on with your life.
