Sometimes following long labor, a Woman may have problems giving birth to her baby. She could also be tired, the baby may not be in the correct position or the baby itself may be showing signs of exhaustion. In these cases, the surgeon may make the hard decision to help the baby alone.
Forceps are the main method of delivering the baby. These forceps are made up by two metal prongs that look like spoons, they can then be placed on either side of the head. These forceps can be used by the surgeons during the C-section. Forceps are less popular for vaginal deliveries, but they could still be used for certain cases.
Sometimes where a women shouldn't push. Like for instances, if her blood pressure was very high, she had heart disease and a stroke. Then if you were to push, it would be bad. In certain cases you can get them to go into labor & allow the head to come down and have forceps to fit on either side of the baby's head. This allows helping the baby into the world. If you apply enough force with the forceps, then the Mom won't have to push the baby.
In rare cases, when you apply pressure you can cause damage to the infants head. One of the unfortunate thing that come from forceps delivery is that this can compress the facial nerve. Which appears out the outside of the face in the back position. This means that babies could have a facial palsy usually on one side of infants face, The good news here is that the baby can recover from this only within a few weeks of their life. So its important for many surgeons and nurses to monitor this. Right after the first couple of weeks after the child birth is done.
