Uncovering a suitable holiday to please all members of the family could well be quite a complex challenge. In days gone by while my little ones were still young I was always reluctant to take them to foreign countries, and didn’t until they were both teenagers. I was aware how exhausting high temperatures and exertion can be, as a result even long after growing out of needing an afternoon nap it was best to allow them have one or endure the other option – grumpy youngsters. Now, I am no miser when it comes to holidays I didn’t see the sense of paying out my hard won pounds on a well-earned trip and then sitting in a hotel bed room whilst the young ones had a sleep.
We sometimes rented a holiday let to learn about somewhere in this country we had never seen before, the truth is we now own such a property so not surprisingly we actively encourage other people to try it (have a look at the Places to Stay page on our web site). Nevertheless, we at the same time decided to have a look at the experience of camping and I am incredibly pleased we did.
Every time we all went camping I always tried to find a place where there was plenty to keep the youngsters busy and safe so that my spouse and I might catch up on our reading, or the entire family group might visit neighbouring places of interest. One advantage about camping is that it is comparatively straightforward to move on to some other location if the one you are on does not appeal to you or you’ve done and encountered all there is to do and experience. A number of the most memorable holidays we have had were at places that were somewhat basic yet in the midst of stunning countryside.
The members of the family who received the most from our camping weekends were the youngsters. Our son in particular, fitted in to this lifestyle perfectly and it become quite usual for him to leave us for a couple of hours only to re-surface hot, thirsty, hungry and filthy with a group of other small children in tow. He would be fed and watered and then off he would go once more with his retinue to continue whatever adventure activity they'd been enjoying. In those halcyon years we had no need to be anxious concerning where they all were as all the other mums and dads would be keeping a watchful but discreet watch on them, as did we.
On one occasion we holidayed at a site where there was a community hall with entertainment, but as we did not much care for it we pitched our tent well away from it. It turned out to be one of those beautifully warm summers’ evenings in which you can stay outside well into the night. We lit a modest fire and baked a handful of spuds, by which time there was yet again an array of children gathered around us. After despatching them off to collect sticks to fuel the fire we all sat around taking part in charade-type games my spouse and I providing the stories for all the young ones to play out. Mothers and fathers seeking to go to the community hall were ignored and nobody wanted to go when it was time for sleep, they were enjoying such a fantastic time. When all had gone silent we sat back in our seats observing the night sky and saw our first shooting star.
So, camping – not just for the little ones to enjoy!
