As humans, we are constantly faced with relationships over our lifespans. Friendships and romances, as well as co worker interactions and family relations are all parts of our lives. Our ability to have rich interactions like this is one of the greatest capacities of humankind, and the relationships we have are what make us unique and interesting people, capable of things we might not have thought possible.

In spite of this fact, we might end up in relationships which are not healthy, or which have an emotional toll on us. We might not always recognize these unhealthy interactions. People do have plenty of disagreements in any type of relationship, but there is a line that must be drawn between healthy and unhealthy. Understanding what determines this line is important to understand fully how healthy connections between people can be established.

Healthy relationships require specific factors to thrive. For example, respect for others, a sense of security and comfort in the relationship, a method of resolving conflicts peacefully, a supportive attitude, and interest in each others lives are things that are necessary for a good connection. Other friendships should be encouraged. When these factors are present, it is safe to say that a relationship is probably healthy.

To contrast this however, unhealthy relationships are not so positive. People in a relationship like this will try to control or manipulate the other, or dictate how each other behaves. They might criticize how the other lives, or have a lack of respect for each other. Possessiveness, jealousy, and manipulation are all common examples of an unhealthy connection. Violence or even the threat of violence is another factor of an unhealthy interaction. These types of relationships should immediately seek help, or perhaps counseling to try to fix the bad parts of their human connections.

Small factors like stress, lack of communication, or work and money problems can make healthy relationships bad. Even underlying factors that are not addressed may cause strife between a couple. No matter what the reasons are, if someone is not comfortable in a relationship, this needs to be addressed so the problems can be identified and hopefully resolved.

Relationships that are strong and stable are the ones that are really worth working to maintain. These types of interactions can withstand troubled times. The real factor at play here is respect, which is necessary for a good relationship. If two people respect each other, they can work out problems. Healthy relationships require respect for the test of time. If respect isn t present, human connections cannot thrive, even if other factors sometimes come into play.

If relationships do not meet the guidelines of what is healthy, then the connection should be evaluated and fixed. Unhealthy things might be coming into play that are taking emotional tolls on whomever is involved. In this case, counseling is a good idea, and people who are involved in these types of interactions may need to come to an agreement to end their interactions. If not, the continued problems may make a severe impact on just how stable the lives of people involved are.
