Owning and maintaining a successful garden is about more than just having a "green thumb" or knowing when to plant your tomatoes. There is plenty that can be learned through everyday knowledge and tips that experienced gardeners are often willing to share with any listening ears. All you have to do is be interested in learning the right way.

A great tip to consider in regards to gardening is to be sure that you are protecting your skin when outside. This is important because long hours in the garden can potentially mean long hours of UV ray exposure. Wear a hat, loose clothing and protect yourself with sunscreen.

Keep a garden journal. The more information you collect about your site, your plants, and successes or failures in the garden, the less likely you are to make costly mistakes in the future. Although there are many resources to guide you, the most important resource is your own experience. Always be sure to record important information, like the name and variety of the plant, the date it was planted, and where in the garden it is located.

You should put chives around flower beds as it is a natural insect repellant. Flies, aphids and other pests are easily repelled using simple herbs like chives. Chives can be grown or can be purchased as any grocery store. Place a generous amount around the roses and notice the bugs stay at bay.

Layer your compost pile like lasagna. By having different layers interspersed throughout the whole pile you can best encourage proper decay and development of fresh fertilizer. Generally you want to have your dry leaves and sugary materials on the bottom, manure or already decomposing materials in the middle, and a nice layer of top soil leech the nutrients.

A great tip to consider when gardening is the fact that you need to get rid of weeds even though you might not enjoy working at it. This is important because weeds steal nutrients from the soil that your plants need and they also may overtake your plants, denying them water and sunlight.

Slugs can be a big problem in the garden. One suggestion for getting rid of slugs is to fill shallow containers, like a tuna can, with a mixture of one part beer and one part water. The slugs are attracted to the smell and will fall in and drown. Three teaspoons of yeast added to one cup of warm water will also work.

While gardening can be a touchy subject, all you need is the proper education on how to make it turn out right. If you want to start a garden in your home, you need only to follow the tips in this article, and soon you'll have a lovely arrangement of plants growing in your yard!
