Cooking games don’t offer only fun and entertainment. They can also be used in the process of educating your child. How is that possible? Read the following explanations and find out.

Learning math

Learning math doesn’t have to be done the old conventional way with pan and paper. You can try to explain the math concept to your child using some fun cooking games. These games offer a variety of options for practicing counting, addition, subtraction, fractions and measurements. For example, you might want your child to practice counting. Just ask him to count the eggs needed for the cake. Or, when teaching the addition concept, try to use questions like: If I have 1 cookie, and add 2 more, how many do I have now?

While playing cooking games, you can introduce your child to the different kinds of shapes. Maybe you are wondering: “What is the best way to explain the shapes to my child?” Well, you can try to describe the shapes through the various kitchen accessories. Use your imagination and teach your child to differentiate all possible shapes -round, star, square, triangle, cycle and so on.

Learning science

Cooking games are effective tool for explaining science. They give the relation of the food preparation with the basic science concept. While cooking the food, children can watch different chemical reactions on the screen. For an example, how water can become ice when frozen; how chocolate can change the form when heated. While making the virtual cake, you can discuss with your child about the different processes happening around the various food throughout the cooking activities.

Learning to read

Teaching children reading skills gives the best results when they don’t know that you are teaching them. So, playing cooking games is perfect for development of their reading skills. They offer fun, food preparation knowledge and practicing reading skill, at the same time.

Find a game that includes preparation of your child’s favorite food. After that you can start with your lessons. Let’s say, your child wants to make Italian pizza. In order to do that he must read the recipe with the needed ingredients. So, he will try his best to make the desired pizza. While reading the recipe he has to identify the ordinary words such as milk, water, butter, flour. Besides, while making the pizza he will be exposed to tons of math words such as, bigger then, less then etc. That will force your child to learn some new words and to develop fluent reading skills.

So, next time when you are trying to explain some school subject to your child, try to use cooking games. Your child will definitely enjoy your new way of teaching
