The process done by accrediting bodies in giving accreditation to nursing practitioner colleges on the Internet is the same as with usual nursing colleges. Whether it is the whole college or a specific nursing program, it is up to the accrediting groups to choose which one to accredit. We can say that it is better if both the institution and program get certified at the same time.
Accreditation serves as an indication for students studying nursing practitioner program as this ensures that the program provides quality education to prepare students for a future career. Before the accrediting body authorizes a specific college, they will first send a team to visit the college to do an observation. This group of people will see to it if the programs are meeting nursing education standards.
When a nursing college is accredited it means that they have a set of standards that they follow, which is a requirement for a good nursing institute. If you enrolled in a nursing school that is not accredited then the same will happen when you will be having a doctorate in which you will not be able to enter an accredited school. With that it can stop you from achieving your goal.
There are two national accrediting agencies for nurse practitioner schools - the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). These organizations are the ones that legally recognize nursing education programs. You could also see what is written in the national organization of nurse practitioners, which is the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
What NLNAC does is to accredit special nursing education programs such as a master's, bachelor's, a doctorate and even diploma and practical nurse programs. The CCNE is considered an arm of the AACN and what they recognize are those competent bachelor's and graduate programs. The CCNE starts the accreditation process for the DNP programs that were approved by AACN.
For over 1,100 programs beginning in 2006, NLNAC accreditation has already been achieved. You have to make sure that the online program that you are enrolling into is recognized and you can do this by going into the websites of CCNE, NLNAC and AACN. CHEA and USDE can be your source of recognition if ever you feel that an online academy is not telling the truth.
With the Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions of the US Department of Education, you are able to go through databases of recognized nursing institutions. The US Department of Education has the list of all accredited institutions and they cpllect this information for the public even if they do not accredit the universities themselves. CHEA is another organization you can go to.
CHEA has over 3,000 groups that authorize degrees. With CHEA, you have 7,700 colleges and 18,700 and more programs that are accredited by various accrediting agencies. The site of CHEA is also where you can find something about nursing degrees that are available in the net.
Once you have made a shortlist of the possible nurse practitioner schools you like, check each school's accreditation status, which is usually listed on the website's home page. You would clearly see if they are really accredited. This is usually under the 'About Us' chapter of their website.
You should be able to go to the site of the accrediting agency. In their website you may be able to find the institutions that they have accredited. See to it that the recognition of the programs that are on the list is all up to date.
