While it does not seem like it should be difficult, it is not always easy to select the best color for a room s design. The appearance of any room is largely determined by the colors that are combined within the space, and different colors evoke different feelings. Depending on the vibe that a designer wants to create, one color palette may make more sense than another. For example, when designing a lively and energetic space, a designer or homeowner would choose a completely different color palette than they would if they were designing a calm and relaxing atmosphere in the home. How color is used in a is very important as to how to room looks and feels when it is finished.

The Versatility of Black

Like white, black is an extremely versatile color, and it can be successfully incorporated into just about any space. Since black can really work with any other color, it may be tempting to use it quite frequently. However with black, a little goes a long way, so use the color thoughtfully as an accent rather than as part of the main color palette. For example painting a wall black or hanging a pair of heavy, black drapes could produce a very dreary design that feels very somber and dark. When blackout curtains are needed, it is better to get white shades with a blackout lining to keep light out of the room; this way the room will still feel light and inviting, yet natural light can be controlled as needed. While it is possible to work black curtains into a room s design, bear in mind that it can be a tricky task to have them properly fit the room s overall aesthetic.

Color and Print Together

Once the right color for a space is identified, it is time to tackle pattern, and pairing solids and patterns is a great way to create a home that is lively and inviting. Oftentimes the pattern is found before a solid color is selected, because it is much easier to select a color to go with a favorite pattern than it is to select a pattern with a particular shade of color in mind. Choosing a color to blend with a pattern does not necessarily have to match the pattern; it just needs to work with it. The color can blend or contrast with the pattern as long as they work together.

More complex than finding a color to blend with a particular pattern is finding another pattern to blend with the first pattern. Keep in mind that some patterns are easier to match with other patterns. For example, stripes are easy to match to any number of different prints as long as the colors work well together. Usually there can be only one element different between patterns, meaning that if the prints are substantially different, then they should have colors that are similar. When two patterns match, then the colors can be different. For example, in a room that has a navy and white curtain, adding navy and white floral throw pillows to the couch will look wonderful, because they are tied together with the color palette.

Contrasts Are Stylish

To increase the level of style in a room, a homeowner might consider using contrasts in the design elements. Then to keep the room from feeling too chaotic, allow these contrasting design elements to also relate to each other in some way. Stay away from unrelated prints, and try to keep all patterns in the room within the same color palette for an interesting yet unified look.
