You already know that most of a baby's day centers on his sleeping, relieving himself and his feeding habits. Has someone taught you why a baby's body moves the way it does? Do you understand how babies develop? Most parents don't bother learning the specific of their child's development. Still others find the road from infancy to adulthood a mesmerizing one and learn everything they can about babies and their development.

Babies are always changing and surprising you! Think of what you know about babies and toss half of it out-you've been given a lot of bad information! Here are some things that you might be interested in knowing about babies and how they develop.

A baby's skull is not fused together when it is born. The non-fused skull is one of the reasons that so many adults are afraid to hold newborn children. This is why that space on the back of a newborn's head is called the soft spot and you need to handle it with care or you could do some serious damage to your baby. About three months after your baby is born its skull plates will have started to fuse together and you won't have to be quite so careful with the soft spot at the back of his or her head. Don't get too careless though because it can take as long as eighteen months for the frontal skull plates to harden all the way! It is common knowledge that babies can hear while they are still inside of their mothers. Studies have been done proving that sounds carry through to the womb and that babies can have strong reactions to different sounds. The ears of an infant are sensitive to different decibel levels of sound-both inside of and outside of the womb. A fetus's ears are impressionable and sensitive. Most doctors agree that while a woman is pregnant and that while her baby is still young that she keeps all of the sounds in her house to levels quieter than her vacuum cleaner. The goal is to keep the noise down as much as possible but loud enough that you can still hear it; avoiding construction areas and places with heavy traffic sounds when you leave the house is also a good idea.

Babies are able to physically communicate before they can verbally communicate. This physical communication instinct is one reason that so many parents gravitate toward programs like "baby signs." They teach their babies basic signs for food, wet, sleepy, etc and it helps the babies better communicate what they want and need from their parents. Communication skills of adults who were taught physical communication style before verbal communication style are better than those who were simply taught how to talk as young kids.

There are all sorts of great and interesting facts about babies that are not common knowledge. It is common knowledge just how quickly an infant develops. Have you learned the exact process by which a baby matures? Have you learned about all of the amazing milestones between early childhood and being all grown up? Your knowledge of babies is already expanding-don't you want to learn more about this fascinating subject?
