Almost anyone you ask will tell you that Japanese is a very complex language to learn. Japanese is certainly not simple; compared with Western languages, it has a subtle and poetic quality. It is, however, a rich and fascinating language and you will eventually become used to its rules. Sadly, some people never make the effort to learn Japanese, assuming that it will be too hard. Learning languages is a natural human ability, one that we all share! You do have to devote a certain amount of time and hard work into it, though. There's no reason why you can't become fluent in Japanese if you are willing to give it your best effort. If you want to make the process a little simpler, follow some of these helpful tips.

Immerse yourself in Japanese. If you can afford it, take a trip to Japan and let yourself wander without a translator. You might find that you understand more than you think you do. For many people this sort of total immersion is the best way to learn a language. Being in another country puts you in a situation where you have to learn another language, and it opens your mind to its ability to do this. If you don't have the time or funds to travel to Japan, the second best thing is to spend time in a Japanese neighborhood where you can hear the language being spoken. There is another way that does not involve any travel to immerse yourself in Japanese; for a month or so, watch only Japanese programs and films; don't choose the option for subtitles, as you don't want to give yourself this help. By doing this, you will naturally start to understand what the characters are saying.

Take it easy in the beginning. The most commonly used words should be your main focus when starting out; handle the more advanced stuff later. Each language in the world has several words that represent the same idea or object. Rather than work on learning all of the Japanese words for "hungry", for example, learn just one or two so that you can function in a conversation. It is a good idea to hold off on adding to many words to your vocabulary until you learn when and how to use them. Being able to comprehend the small differences words that are similar is a major step in learning a language and is a signal that you have advanced past the beginner's level.

If you have Japanese audio tools, you should also use them when you doing something other than studying. You can learn a lot by practicing a language directly with drills and lessons. There is also something to be said for learning subconsciously. Let your vocabulary lessons play in the background as you drive to work, do chores around the house or even as you shop. A portion of your brain will be registering all these words, and this will really make learning easier. This method works without your having to do much at all, so it's almost effortless learning! There is also a theory that you can even learn while you are sleeping, so you could try learning Japanese in your sleep!

Once you put your mind to it, you will see that you can learn Japanese in many different ways. If you try some of the techniques covered here, you will find your pursuit of Japanese a little simpler and perhaps more enjoyable as well. There's no denying that Japanese is a challenging language; this is especially the case for Westerners. These tips are designed to make you more comfortable in your study of this fascinating language.
