It's not necessary to worry if it's someone you know, in fact it doesn't matter at all. Then, ask yourself how they did it, and then find out how they did it. What you'll need to do is actually do research about their life, and then learn how they did it. It doesn't matter what you learn about them as long as it pertains to them - but pick the good stuff because they're human, too. Imagine this because you can learn successful habits and possibly learn what they did to arrive at the same goal you have.
There are lots of ways NLP can help you at work, in your relationships or any area of your life. Once you learn some basic techniques, you have to practice them whenever you can until you get comfortable with them. There are almost an unlimited number of applications for NLP, and that is the beauty and power of this system.
